Is Beauty In The Eye(Lid) Of The Beholder?
African Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Americans; we all look different, there is no secret about that. We should all embrace our own unique looks, our different features that make us special. Unfortunately though, this is not the case. Thousands upon thousands of people get cosmetic surgery each year to reconstruct their bodies to make them “perfect”. No one is ever satisfied with just being themselves.
A common trait throughout Asia is having monolids, which is different from double eyelids. Monolids have a very small crease on the eyelid, while double eyelids have a distinct crease creating two separate eyelids. A common cosmetic surgery throughout America, mainly done to Asians who are born with monolids is Asian blepharoplasty which is the cosmetic surgery to transform monolids into double eyelids. Our society has raised us to believe that the girl you see on the cover of the magazines, the skinny model with the perfect blemish-free face, and flat stomach and skinny legs is the person you should aspire to be. We always want we don’t have. An Asian who was prepping to get double eyelid surgery stated, “I remember what relatives or family friends would say when I was growing up: that having double eyelids was better. That they looked better, and that they were just better” (The Beauty is in the Eye (lid) of the Beholder). We are never satisfied with the face looking back at us in the mirror, it’s never good enough and we can thank society for this. Due to the human nature to be “perfect”, to have skinny legs, flat stomachs, the perfect size boobs and butt, pretty hair, and a flawless face, it has harassed our society to become something we are not. Never allowing us to be satisfied with the face that stares at you in the mirror. Society has made it virtually impossible for us to ever be content with yourself and your looks. Due to the constant need to be "perfect" and to look perfect, we constantly strive for more. It is never good enough anymore to just be yourself, there is always a flaw that can be changed, always an imperfection that needs to be removed or hidden. It is no longer possible to be yourself and be unique, society has brain washed the population into believing that your natural look is not good enough. There is always something more to be done.
