Dove Real Beauty Sketches
Society today is full of critics. Our world has become a judgement zone. Due to social media, there has been a high standard set for appearances. Remember the saying, “Don’t always judge a book by it’s cover” well our whole world is based around judging people and what they look like. This new, judgemental style of living has shattered the self-esteem of millions around the world. Do you want to be popular in school? Have someone like you? Well, forget about it unless you are deemed as beautiful within society. These new beliefs based around the idea of looking “perfect” and being “flawless” have caused people, more specifically girls and women to think poorly of themselves and go to drastic measures to try and reach their idea of “perfect” or “flawless”.
“Our self perceptions are generally pretty harsh and unbecoming” (Dove Real Beauty Sketches) when in reality, “You are more beautiful than you think” (Dove Real Beauty Sketches). Due to these harsh self perceptions that we as humans have developed, society’s self esteem has plummeted. We are no longer satisfied with the reflection staring back at us in the mirror, we are always looking for more. We are always looking for a new flaw within ourselves, there is always something we feel needs fixing. Why can’t we just be satisfied with who that person is on the other side of the mirror? Instead of being happy with who we are and the reflection we see in the mirror, we constantly point out that flaw within us. Despite the true beauty we actually withhold, it is never good enough to satisfy our hunger for "perfection", whatever the definition of perfection may be. We continue to pick out our flaws in hope to spot them and fix them, when in reality the inability to admire our own beauty and to deem ourselves beautiful is the true flaw.
